In careful or literary English, a fount is the place, person, or idea that knowledge, wisdom, or some quality seems to flow from. Teachers still say, with a smile or without one, “She is a fount of knowledge.” You can also hear it with a sting: “the fount of all wisdom” — meaning someone who talks as if they know everything. It is not the everyday word for a drinking fountain; fountain does that job. Fount is the short, slightly grand cousin, cut down from fountain the way mount sits beside mountain. Use it for a source that pours out, usually something of the mind: wisdom, ideas, stories, even gossip. Though actually, British printers also used fount for a set of type — what most people now call a font. That is a different history, mixed up with font, and it is not this sense. If you mean the letters on a screen, write font. If you mean “where the knowledge comes from,” fount is the old fountain, cut down.
