To fornicate is to have sex with someone you are not married to — but it is not a calm or medical verb. It is an old, heavy word of strong , the language of churches, old law, and moral lectures, not of ordinary talk between friends. In older Christian teaching it named sex outside marriage; a neighbouring word, adultery, was kept for when at least one person was already married. Though actually everyday speech blurs that line, and almost nobody now uses fornicate about themselves. If it appears today, it is often in a sermon, a legal-sounding text, or a joke putting on an old voice. Treat it as a warning-word, not as a neutral way to say “have sex.” The past is fornicated; a person who does it can be called a fornicator, which sounds even more like a charge in court.

組成Borrowed from Latin fornicātus, from the verb fornicor, from fornix, “arch, vault,” and also “brothel.” Courtesans of that world waited for customers out of the rain in arched passageways, so the arch-word picked up the sex meaning. English added the verb-forming ending -ate. (A rare science adjective fornicate, “arched,” comes from the same Latin arch-word; that is not this sense.)
