Forestry is the skill and the science of looking after large areas of trees — what to plant, what to cut, how to keep the woods healthy, and how to use the wood without emptying the land. It is a subject you can study, and also the name of the work. You meet it in school, in government (a forestry department), and in talk about the environment. It is a serious, slightly official word. Though actually, it is not simply 'trees' or 'a forest': a forest is the place; forestry is what people do with that place. People sometimes stretch it to mean the whole tree business, including selling wood.
