A forester is a person whose job is the forest itself: planting trees, cutting some down, watching for fire and disease, and planning how the woods will grow over years. This is not a park gardener, and not someone who only likes walking among trees. In many countries foresters work for the government or for a timber company. The word is ordinary, a little old-fashioned in feel, but still a real job title. Though actually, people who do this work may also be called forestry workers or rangers. Ranger often makes you think of a park, or of keeping visitors safe; a forester is more about the trees. English once had its own word, wuduweard ('wood-guard'), but the French-shaped word forester took its place.
