Your forename is the name that is not your family name — the one people usually call you by. In English that is the first name: in Anna Chen, Anna is the forename and Chen is the surname. The word is more British and more official than first name; you see it on forms. Americans nearly always say first name or given name. Fore- here means “in front”: it is the name written before the family name in English order. Though actually, that order is the other way round from Chinese, where the family name comes first — so the “front” name in English is not the front name on a ID card.
