A foreboding is a strong, heavy feeling that something bad is coming soon — even if you cannot prove it yet. It sits in the stomach more than in the head. People say a sense of foreboding or a foreboding that…. It is not a careful prediction from numbers, like a weather forecast; it is a mood. The same word can sit in front of a noun: a foreboding silence, a foreboding sky — the kind of quiet or look that makes you think trouble is near. You will meet it in stories, news, and careful speech more than in chat; with friends someone might just say I’ve got a bad feeling. Though actually, the feeling is often wrong. The word does not promise that the bad thing will arrive. It only names the feeling.
組成From Middle English forbodyng: fore- (“ahead”) + bode (“to be a sign of what is coming”) + -ing. Compare German Vorbote (“harbinger, omen”).
