Forbiddingly means “in a way”: so that a person or place looks or . A castle may stand forbiddingly on a hill. A guard may stare forbiddingly at visitors. It is simply the adverb from the adjective — same idea, used to say how someone looks or how something appears. It is a little formal, more at home in stories and careful description than in everyday chat.
