In a big house in the past, a footman was a man-servant in uniform. He opened the front door, took coats, and called out visitors' names as they came in. He might wait at table or ride on the back of a coach. It was a junior job next to the butler, who ran the household. You meet the word in old novels, period films, and history; almost nobody has a footman now, except perhaps at a palace. Though actually the word is older still. It first meant a soldier who fought on foot, or a servant who ran beside a horse. The door-opening house servant is the sense meet.
