1. 1

If you are foolhardy, you take risks that are stupid and not needed. This is not a kind word for brave. A brave person faces danger for a reason; a foolhardy person rushes in without thinking, and often the danger helps nobody. You can call a person foolhardy, and also a plan, a decision, or an attempt. It is a little formal — you meet it in news, school writing, and warnings more than in casual chat. People sometimes use it with a half-smile about themselves, after they have already done the silly thing.

    有勇無謀的、魯莽的

組成From Old French fol hardi, “foolishly bold”: fol (foolish) + hardi (hardy — tough and bold). English still reads it as fool + hardy. The fool piece goes back to Latin follis, a bellows or a bag of air (the bag you squeeze to blow on a fire) — the picture is someone puffed up and empty-headed. Hardy goes back to a Germanic word for “hard” and “brave”.
