In British English, the FO is the government department that deals with other countries — ambassadors, treaties, trouble abroad. People have long called it the Foreign Office, and newspapers still write the FO as if everyone knows which office that is.
The tidy official name has kept moving. For years it was the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (), because it also covered the Commonwealth. In 2020 it was joined with the international-development department and became the FCDO. Though actually, a lot of British people, and most older writing, still say the Foreign Office or the FO. The short name stuck to the job, not to the latest plaque on the door.
It is a British label. The United States has a State Department, not an FO. Taiwan has 外交部; we do not call ours the FO.
Those same two letters can mean other things on a printed page (folio, a page). This entry is the government one.
