A flyby is when a spacecraft goes close to a planet, moon, or comet but does not stop or land. It passes by, takes pictures and measurements, and carries on. Space agencies plan flybys because landing is hard and expensive; flying past still teaches you a lot.
This is mainly a science and news word. You will hear it when a probe visits a planet: The spacecraft will make a flyby of Jupiter. The point is the close pass — near enough to study, not near enough to stay.
Though actually, people also use flyby for a plane that flies low over a place. That everyday use sits closer to or flyover. The sense here is the space one: close pass, gather information, do not land.
