1. 1

To do with rivers, or made by rivers. A technical word used by , , and engineers when they talk about how rivers shape the land — 'fluvial erosion' is the wearing away of rock by a river, 'fluvial deposits' are the sand and stones a river drops as it slows down, 'a fluvial plain' is flat land built up by a river over a long time. You will meet it in textbooks, research papers, and environmental reports, almost never in speech. In ordinary English we just say 'river' as a describing word: 'river mud', 'river valley'. So think of 'fluvial' as the specialist's word for that.
