If something flummoxes you, it leaves you completely stuck: you cannot see what it means or what to do next. People reach for it when a question, a form, a , or a sudden change has them beaten — not just a little unsure. It is a verb, and the thing that wins is usually the subject: a riddle flummoxes you; a teacher can flummox a class. Informal, still a little British and a little playful; you would not put it in a science paper, though actually educated people still say it with a smile. It is not a word for fear or shock. The mind just stops.

組成Uncertain. It probably rose out of a British dialect (people have pointed to words in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, southern Cheshire, and Sheffield). The sound of the word seems to paint the idea of throwing something down in a rough, untidy way. First clear use is around 1837, in Charles Dickens.
