1. 1

A florin was a British coin used before decimal money arrived in 1971. It was worth two shillings, which became 10 pence (10p) in the new system; people also called it a two-shilling piece. The name is older than Britain. The first florins were gold coins from Florence, with a little lily (a flower) on them — that is why they were “little flower” coins. Other countries used a florin too: the Dutch was also called a florin, and Hungary’s forint is the same name in another shape. In British English today you meet it in history, in old prices, or in stories set before 1971.
