Florence is a city in , in the west-central part of Italy. In the 1300s and 1400s it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe: bankers, cloth merchants, and the family made it a centre of painting, sculpture, and fine buildings. People still go there to see that older Florence — churches, palaces, and art from the time we call the Renaissance. Italians call the city Firenze; Florence is the name English (and French) speakers use. The same spelling is also an English woman's name, which became popular because of Florence , a famous nurse who was born in this city. When the word names a place, though, it is this Italian city, not a person.
組成The English name came through French Florence, from Latin Flōrentia, “the flowering / flourishing (place),” from flōrens (“flowering”), from flōs (“flower”). The Italian name Firenze is a doublet — the same Latin word by another path. The old idea is a place that is blooming.
