A floret is one of the little flower-shaped pieces you break off a broccoli or a cauliflower. The whole head is made of many florets packed together; when you cook the vegetable you often snap it into florets so each person gets a small tree-like bit. Plant scientists also use floret for a tiny flower that sits inside a bigger flower head (as in a daisy), but in the kitchen and in everyday English it is the broccoli or cauliflower piece people mean.

組成From Old French florete, a diminutive of flor, “flower” — so “little flower.” Doublet of floweret (almost the same word by another spelling) and of fleuret (a light fencing sword, named for a flower-like tip).
