A flophouse is a very cheap place to sleep when you have little money and nowhere to live. You do not go there for a holiday. The beds may be in a shared room; the place is often dirty, noisy, and barely a hotel at all. The name comes from old hobo slang: flop meant lie down to sleep, and house is the building. Though actually, the people who had to stay there might not have used this word about their own night; it is a rough outsider’s label, more at home in American news and old stories than in a polite travel book. A cheap but decent hotel is not a flophouse. The word points to poverty, and often to a hard, unsafe street.
