Flooring is the material people use to make a floor or to cover an old one. Wood, tile, stone, vinyl, and carpet can all be flooring. When a shop sells “flooring,” they mean the stuff in packs or rolls — the product — not the room you stand in. Though actually, at home most people still say floor: “We need a new floor in the kitchen.” Flooring sounds a little more like builders, DIY shops, and product names. You can also hear someone flooring a room, meaning they are putting the floor in, but the usual word here is the noun: the covering itself.
