A floodlight is a very strong lamp that throws light over a wide outdoor space at night, the way water covers a field. Stadiums, sports grounds, and the fronts of big buildings use them so people can play, watch, or see the walls after dark. You often see them in groups, high on tall poles. The word is also a verb: workers floodlight a pitch. When the lamps are on, the place is floodlit — that is the usual describing word. The flood here is not river water. It is the picture of something spreading out and covering everything. These lights are harsher and wider than a street lamp or a torch. If a match is under floodlights, it is an evening game.
