Flippancy is the attitude of not being serious about something other people think you should treat with care. It is lightness in the wrong place: a joke, a shrug, a quick clever line when the room wanted respect, sadness, or thought. The word is a little formal and a little judging. Teachers, parents, and use it; friends in casual talk more often just say you are not taking it seriously. Flippancy can sound witty for a second and then land as cold, because it tells the other person their feeling does not count. It is not the same as humour. A kind joke can ease a hard moment; flippancy skips the hard moment. It is also not simply — you can stay polite and still be flippant. People often name it after the fact: they remember the tone more than any one sentence.

組成flippant (not serious in a careless way) + -cy (the state or quality). So flippancy is the quality of being flippant.
