The form of Dutch spoken in the northern part of Belgium, in the region called Flanders. Two things are worth knowing. First, it sounds like German to an outsider's ear because it is a Germanic language, but it is genuinely Dutch — a Flemish speaker and a Dutch speaker from the Netherlands can understand each other easily, the way a speaker and a Beijing speaker can. The differences are in accent, some vocabulary and a softer sound. In fact Belgian officials call the language 'Dutch' (Nederlands), and 'Flemish' is more the everyday name for the Belgian variety. Second, the word is also an adjective for anything from Flanders — Flemish painters (Rubens, Van Eyck, Bruegel), Flemish towns, Flemish food. As a noun it can also mean the people. Always capitalised, because it comes from a place name.
組成From Old English flēmisc, related to Flanders (the region). The '-ish' ending is the same one in English, Spanish, Polish — it makes 'belonging to this place or people'.
