Flanders is a low, flat region in western Europe. Today it covers much of northern Belgium, where many people speak Dutch, and it also reaches into the southern Netherlands and northern France. History books, especially about World War I, use the name a lot: many terrible battles were fought in the mud there, and poems still speak of Flanders fields. It is a place name, so we write it with a capital F. It is not a country of its own today. People from Flanders are ; a man from there can be called a Fleming. The name is much older than the war. It probably comes from words for wet, flowing land — mudflats and salt marshes by the sea.
組成From Middle English Flaundres, from Anglo-Norman, from Middle Dutch for the region. Further back it is tied to old words for waterlogged land and flowing water (the same deep family as flow): mudflats and salt marshes along that coast.
