A flagstaff is a tall pole that a flag hangs from — the same thing as a . Staff here is an old word for a stick or rod, so the word is simply flag + staff. Though actually, is what most people say now. Flagstaff sounds a little older and a little more formal; you still meet it on buildings, in written notices, and in place names. If a student wants one everyday word for the thing, will take them further; flagstaff is the twin with a slightly coat.
