Fixed-term describes a job, a contract, a class, or a stay that already has a start and an end. When the time is up, the agreement ends, unless both sides make a new one. At work this sits opposite a job with no end date: a fixed-term contract might run six months or two years. Schools and offices use it a lot. Though actually, fixed here does not mean “repaired,” and it does not mean “stuck forever” — it means the length was agreed in advance. People also use it for rent and loans: a fixed-term lease lasts a stated number of months.
