Long-term is about a long stretch of time — either something that lasts a long time, or something that belongs to the far future rather than this week. A long-term plan is about months or years from now. A long-term contract lasts a long time. Doctors talk about long-term effects: what a medicine, a habit, or an injury does to you over years, not just tomorrow. You will also hear long-term memory, long-term care, and a long-term relationship. The opposite is short-term. People use the word in two close ways, and both are normal: 'this will go on for a long time' and 'this is about later, not now.' It can sit before a noun (long-term plans) or after a verb (think long-term). It is the time-scale word. It is not quite the same as long-time, which more often describes a person who has already been something for years.
