    This is how you say fitful when you are talking about the doing, not the thing itself. If you sleep fitfully, you sleep in starts and stops. If a radio works fitfully, the sound comes through, then it doesn't, then it does again. Same picture as fitful: not smooth, not steady, on and off. You will hear it most with sleep, light, wind, and machines that cannot keep going.
