Fisticuffs is a fight with bare hands — no knives, no sticks, just hitting. You almost always hear it with a smile, or in an old-fashioned voice, like a : “It nearly came to fisticuffs.” News about a real street fight would say a fight or a brawl; fisticuffs makes the scene a bit like a cartoon or an old story. The word stays plural, like scissors; people do not usually say “a fisticuff.” The cuff piece is an old word for a blow, a hit — not the cuff of a sleeve, and not the metal rings police put on wrists.
