If a car, a bus, or a plane fishtails, the back end slides from side to side, like a fish its tail. It usually happens because the tyres have lost their grip — on water, ice, or loose small stones — so the back is sliding, not rolling straight. Drivers in Taiwan often call this 甩尾. Though actually, 甩尾 is also what people say when someone does it on purpose, as a show; the English verb fishtail more often means it is happening to you, and you are trying to get control back. You can use it as a noun too: a fishtail is that swinging movement. The same compound, in other talks, can mean a fish's real tail, or a braid that looks like one. Here we mean the sliding.
