A firetrap is a building that would be very hard to get out of if a fire started there. Think of an old block with narrow stairs, a locked emergency door, no fire escape, and maybe bars on the windows: the people inside could be caught. Newspapers use it when they are angry about a dangerous building. It is not a careful engineer’s label so much as a warning word — it says this place is a trap, and fire is what springs it. Though actually, nobody built a machine to catch people. It became a trap because of bad design, cheap changes, or blocked exits. The word is a bit sharp. You hear it from journalists, neighbours, and safety campaigners more than from someone filling in a form.
