Fire-raising is the crime of starting a fire on purpose, usually so a house, a shop, a car, or a stretch of forest will burn. British police and courts still use this word; American English almost always says instead. The fire is not an accident, and it is not a cooking fire that got out of hand — someone meant the place to burn. The person who does it is a . Though actually, even in Britain you will hear more and more, because American films and news travel so far. Fire-raising is the older British name for the same ugly act.
