This entry is filed as the crime of starting a fire on purpose — what more formal English calls . In British English that idea lives in a small family of words built from fire and raise (in older speech, to raise a fire was to start one). Though actually, the tidy split in real use is this: fire-raising is usually the crime; a fire-raiser is usually the person who does it. American English almost always says and instead. So if you meet fire-raiser in a British news story, ask which one they mean — the person is more common; the crime sense sits next door in fire-raising. It is a serious, formal-to-news word, not a joke, and it is not the same as a fire-eater (a circus performer).
