A finch is a small bird with a short, thick , made for cracking seeds. Some kinds live in gardens and woods; some are kept as pets — the little striped finch is the one many families know. English also names , , and this way. Though actually, the word is a little messy: scientists keep “finch” for one tight group of seed-eaters, but everyday English uses it for other small, similar birds too. You do not need the science to use the word. It is a calm nature name, not slang, and not a picture-word for a person. If you already know , a finch sits in that same “small bird” group, only the is shorter and stronger.
