1. 1

A chaffinch is a small, common in Europe. The male is the one people notice: a pink-brown chest, a grey-blue cap, and two clear white bars on the wings. The female is paler and browner. You hear them in gardens, parks, and woods, and they often hop on the ground looking for seeds. It is an ordinary countryside bird, not a rare one, and the word is simply the bird’s name — not slang, and not a poetic use of “finch.” If you already know robin or as “the little bird in the garden,” a chaffinch belongs in that same everyday group, just with a more colourful male.

組成Long written as chaff + finch. Some scholars now think the first part may instead mean “ornamented” or “colourful,” so “colourful finch.” The finch half is the bird-family name.
