If cloth, mist, or a curtain is filmy, it is very thin, so you can almost see through it: a filmy dress, a filmy scarf, a filmy cloud over the hills. This film is the old meaning — a thin layer, like a skin — not a movie. That is why a filmy curtain has nothing to do with the cinema. The word feels a little soft and story-like; you find it in descriptions of clothes and weather more than in a science lab. Though actually, filmic looks like a sister and is built from the same pieces, but filmic means “about movies.” Same family, different job.
