Fiji is a country in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It is not one block of land. It is two main islands and hundreds of smaller ones. People live on some of them; many tiny ones have nobody. The capital is . A 2014 count put the population at about 897,000; that number will have moved since. English is widely used there, and so is , the local language. The islands sit in a warm sea, and the English name is now the usual one on maps.

組成The name does not split in English. English took it from Tongan Fisi. Tongan had taken it from the Fijian people’s own name for the islands, Viti, which probably first meant “east” or “sunrise.” Captain Cook wrote down the Tongan sound as Fiji, and that spelling stuck.
