A fightback is the attempt to climb back to a strong place after you have been losing — especially in sport. The score is against a team; then they start winning points again. News writers love it: “a late fightback”. You also hear it in , when someone who looked finished starts to recover. It is the verb fight back packed into one noun. It feels like newspaper English, a little informal, more British than American (American writers often say comeback). It is about recovering, not about hitting someone in the back.
