Fieldwork is studying something out in the real world, not at a desk and not in a laboratory. A scientist might collect plants on a ; a student of society might live in a town for a while and talk with people. Teachers also send students out to look, count, and ask, and that counts as fieldwork too. The “field” here is not a farm. It is a picture-word for “out there, where the thing actually happens”. It is a calm, academic word. You do fieldwork, or you go out on fieldwork; you do not usually “make” it.
