A field-test is a try-out of new equipment in the real place it will be used, not in a quiet laboratory. You field-test a tent by sleeping in the mountains, a helmet by giving it to real cyclists, a farm tool by taking it to the actual field. The point is to see what breaks, what confuses people, or what weather and dirt do — things a lab will not show you. It can be a noun (a field-test) or a verb (to field-test something). In writing you will also see field test as two words. Though actually, “the field” here does not have to be grass; it just means out in real life. Software people use it too, which would surprise a farmer.
field-test 是把新裝備拿到真正會用到的地方去試，而不是只在安靜的實驗室裡試。例句「You field-test a tent by sleeping in the mountains」的意思是在山上睡一晚，就是在實地測試帳篷。測試的重點，是看東西哪裡會壞、哪裡讓人搞不清楚，或是天氣和泥土會造成什麼影響，這些都是實驗室看不出來的。這個字可以當名詞，也可以當動詞，動詞的句型是「to field-test something」。這裡的 field 不一定是草地，只是指真實的生活場景；軟體人員也常用這個詞，這點大概會讓農夫覺得很意外。
