Fido is a dog’s name that English speakers treat as the typical dog name — the one you put in a joke or a cartoon when you need a dog and you are not being particular. Though actually, very few real dogs are called Fido. It is a stereotype more than a fashion. The name comes from Spanish or Italian fido, from Latin fidus, “faithful,” which is a kind name for a dog you trust. Some people say it comes straight from the Latin verb “I trust,” but that is probably a story people like more than a careful history. The joke is old: even in the 1700s you can find a dog answering to Fido. For a student in Taiwan it is a bit like assuming every dog is 小白 or 旺旺: everyone knows the type, almost nobody’s dog is actually called that. It is a name, not a word for “dog.”
