The Fens (almost always with “the”, and with a capital F) are a large flat area in eastern England, especially around , Lincolnshire, and Norfolk. Long ago the sea and rivers covered much of it. People later drained the water, and now it produces very good crops. British people treat this as a place name, like “the Lakes” or “the Midlands”. If you say “the Fens”, they picture that one famous stretch of country, not any wet field. Though actually, the name is only the ordinary word — wet, low ground — turned into a proper name for that whole region. Without the capital and the “the”, fens are just fens anywhere.
