A fen is a stretch of low, flat, wet land — too wet to be ordinary until people dig ditches, not deep enough to be a lake. The famous ones are in eastern England, often called the Fens, where the ground was drained over centuries.

組成Does not split. From Middle English fen, fenne, from Old English fenn (marsh, mud, dirt), from a Germanic word for boggy ground (Proto-Germanic *fanją), ultimately from an old root *pen- “bog, mire.” Not from Chinese 分 — that look-alike is a separate English borrowing.
