Fenland is land that is a : low, wet, soft ground, often with grasses and dark water. It is not quite a lake and not quite a dry field. In eastern England a lot of this country was later drained so people could farm it. The word is simply + land, and it is a rather old, place-and-nature kind of English — you meet it in geography and in writing about the countryside more than in city talk. Though actually, people also use Fenland with a capital F as a place name for a district in . As a common word, though, it just means country: a , or a stretch of that wet land.
