A farrier is the person who makes and fits metal shoes for horses’ feet. The work is fire, hammer, and the hoof. A vet is the horse’s doctor; a farrier looks after the feet — though actually a good farrier also knows a lot about why a horse goes lame, because bad feet are often the reason. A works iron in a general way; a farrier is the specialist for hooves. You will hardly hear the word unless you are around horses. It is old, and a little proud of itself.
