Ferrous means containing iron, or to do with iron. It is not an everyday word like iron; you meet it in science, medicine, and metalwork. Chemists are here, though actually they keep two iron words apart: ferrous is iron in one form (the one often written Fe2+), and ferric is iron in another. In industry, ferrous metals are the family that contain iron — steel is the obvious one — and they are the metals a magnet will usually stick to. Non-ferrous metals, like copper or aluminium, do not belong to that family. Iron tablets may be labelled ferrous sulfate. You would not call a frying pan ferrous in ordinary talk; you would just say it is iron or steel.
