A farmstead is the plus the buildings around it — barn, sheds, yard — seen as one tight group. It is the “home place” of the farm, not the fields that run away from it. You hear it more in writing and in the countryside than in city talk; many people would just say “the farm” for the same picture. It was built on the pattern of homestead: farm + stead, and stead is an old word for a place.
