Here fairytale is not the story. It is a describing word. A fairytale life, a fairytale ending, a fairytale romance: something so happy, so lucky, or so finished that it feels like a children’s story, not like ordinary days. Newspapers love it for weddings, sports wins, and overnight success. It is warm and a bit dreamy. People also use it with a raised , as if to say “this cannot last,” or “this is the pretty version.” You will see fairy-tale with a , and fairy tale as two words for the story itself; all three spellings turn up, and readers still follow. Though actually, calling something fairytale can hide years of work: the “fairytale rise” still took a long time. The word does not mean there are fairies in it. It means the ending is the kind children are promised — and grown-ups half know that real life is messier.
