People say fab when they think something is really, really good — a jacket, a plan, a night out. It is a short, happy, informal word, mostly British. It was especially common in the 1960s, so it can sound a little old-fashioned or now; younger people may use it with a smile, as if they know it is a vintage word. You can cry “That’s fab!” or talk about “a fab idea.” Do not put it in a serious letter or a school essay unless you want that tone. Though actually, it is just fabulous with the ending cut off — same meaning, smaller word.
