Extroversion is the name psychologists give to a way of being: you get energy from people, you like being out in a group, and you often feel sure of yourself in company. The opposite lean is introversion — turning inward, needing quiet after a crowd. Though actually, the spelling is a small mess. The older psychology spelling is extraversion, with an a, from Latin extra, “outside.” Everyday English mostly extroversion, with an o, because it sits beside introversion. Both are real; journals may prefer extra-, magazines either. And another messy truth: almost nobody is only one thing. Extroversion is a lean, not a box. A quiet person can still have a lot of it, and a talkative person can still need a night alone. The word belongs to psychology and to magazine quizzes; friends more often just say outgoing.
