An extremophile is a living thing — nearly always a tiny one, like a bacterium — that is at home in a place most life would die: boiling water, ice, salt lakes, strong acid, the deep dark sea. Scientists made the word for biology, not for people. A person who loves is not an extremophile; that is just a person who likes a thrill. These little lives “love,” in a word-building way, the extreme. They matter because they show life can work in places we thought were empty, and because they help us think about life on other planets. You will meet this in science class and nature films, not in daily chat.
