A formal, legal-sounding word. It means something happens outside a particular country’s land, or is treated as if that country’s usual laws do not fully apply there. Diplomats’ homes, some military bases, and court cases about acts that happened in another country all get this word. You will meet it in news about law, not in the night market. Extraterritorial waters means the sea beyond a country’s own stretch. Extraterritorial jurisdiction means a court trying to reach acts that happened somewhere else. It is heavier than just saying abroad or international.

Of a section of territory: not subject to the laws of the local country.
